There are two different types of proxy. One involves installing special software or changing configuration on your PC. The other is just visiting the special website and putting in the address you wish to visit.
A proxy is a way for you to get privacy and to view internet sites that are blocked on your school, work place, or even the library network. When you use a proxy, all the information is transferred through it. In fact most of the schools, workplaces and libraries do not allow you to install special software on their computers. So I recomend you to use web-based proxies. Just check out search engines to find them.
